Port Police Strap home

Unlike most County and Metropolitan police forces, the Port police do not receive sponsoring support from the Home Office. Whilst most Home Office legislation, policy and good practise does impact on the day to day operation of ports police, the central government department responsible for ports police is actually the Department for Transport (DfT) and not the Home Office. Consequently the national police terms and conditions of service do not apply to ports police (although some adopt them anyway).

As a result of the DfT's sponsorship of ports police and following questions raised in Parliament, the DfT undertook an extensive review of ports police in the late 1990's. A report was finally published in 2008 and that report explores the role of ports police in today’s society. It looks at standards and accountability together with questions about value for money and relevance in the larger policing family. That report is published in full in the attached file below which is published here with the permission of the DfT.
